Is it affecting your life?
If your mental health is deteriorating to the point where your life is affected, it’s time to seek treatment. Once you find yourself unable to have the quality of life that you desire, you know that you’re at the point where you need to start thinking about your options.
Your relationships and professional life will start to deteriorate if you leave your mental illness untreated because it begins to take over. By making the leap to counseling or therapy, you can take back control of your situation and start setting up a plan to map out your goals and desires.
Do you see it as a problem?
Even if your mental health does not necessarily affect your life in a major way, you may be personally unhappy. If you find yourself constantly thinking about where you wish you were as opposed to where you are, it may be time to sit down with a therapist and talk through everything that is going on with your life.
For instance, if you think you might have a bit of OCD in you, the little routines you have to do every day will not necessarily cause you to lose control of your life. They might not be a detriment to you at all. However, if you wish that you had more of a handle on these tendencies, therapy is a good decision to give you the tools you need to accomplish this.
Is it straining your relationships?
One dangerous side effect of mental illness is that it can seem completely harmless to you. For instance, you may feel like your anxiety doesn’t affect anybody but yourself. However, a lot of the time that isn’t true. Your friends, family, and significant other can generally see adverse effects from mental health much more clearly than you can.

Mental illness may not be stopping you from accomplishing the things you need to, but is it stopping you from doing the things you want to?

If you are having a hard time visualizing what you want in the next few years or you feel like you’re not mentally able to attempt to reach your goals, talk to a therapist and see if you can work together to find a way to combat your mental illness.
