Social Media As Expressive Therapy

In today’s world of smartphones and public Wi-Fi, social media has become a large part of many people’s lives. We have come to use it to keep in touch with friends and family. We update them about our day by sending messages and posting photos.

Others have also come to use it as a source of news, albeit dangerously, as fake news is also rampant. We find out almost instantly about celebrity feuds, weather updates and presidential blunders on Facebook and Twitter.

However, one aspect that many may not notice is that social media has become an avenue for expressive therapy.

What Is Expressive Therapy?

Expressive therapy refers to the use of different forms of art in order for a person to express their feelings and their creativity. In this way, therapists are able to help convey emotions and issues they may have and then be able to understand them.

“Expressive artistic activities have a useful role in psychiatric rehabilitation as leisure and occupational skills,” said William Spaulding, PhD.

Expressive therapy emphasizes the process of creating, rather than whatever the end result is. It can also come in many forms: visual art, dance, music, drama, and writing. A person can focus on one or combine different forms in order to express themselves.

“I see this as part of a whole-person approach to therapy,” said Ilene Serlin, PhD, a registered dance therapist. “I think a collaborative approach to health care is essential, and creative arts therapy is part of that. We need to step outside our niches.”

What Role Does Social Media Play

Social media serves as an avenue for people to post freely. We can post about our pets, or our child’s dance recital, or about our recent engagement. We can talk about our disapproval of a local politician’s opinions. We can review a newly-opened restaurant. The ideas are endless.

However, most of what we post have some emotional connection. We wouldn’t post about something if it didn’t mean anything to us in some way, right? It’s through our posts that we get to express even our smallest opinions and emotions on specific matters. Through this, we are able to convey the feelings we have.

Additionally, social media not only lets us express ourselves, but it also keeps us connected. This is related to another form of therapy called talk therapy. This is where people talk out their issues and concerns with other people to help them come to terms with their personal issues. With talk therapy, people can also come up with solutions or ways to deal with their problems.

How Does This Become Therapeutic?

Social media can become therapeutic in the sense that it allows much room for self-expression and social interaction. Imagine feeling extremely anxious. With the use of social media, one can turn to a blog as a journal, writing about their concerns. By writing down one’s thoughts, it makes it clearer to the person what they should be focusing on. They can then try to come up with ways to solve their worries.

“[W]riting helped patients get better, and also kept them from getting worse,” said Joshua Smyth, PhD. “By writing, you put some structure and organization to those anxious feelings.”

At the same time, one can seek other people to talk to. This helps lessen the feeling of having to shoulder your problems alone and keep them to yourself. Others can now help you understand and deal with your feelings. They can also help to find solutions for your concerns.

With all this taken into consideration, it’s important to be aware of how social media affects you. While it can serve as a channel for therapy and healing, it can also be destructive when not used properly.

4 Fish Oil Benefits That May Save You A Trip To The Doctor’s Office

The psychology of an individual is what gets affected the most when you start dealing with physical issues and notice how much effect they have on your daily life. For instance, if you wake up in the middle of the night a few times a week due to leg cramps, you may feel the ache till the next morning. If light sleepers experience it, they may be unable to go back to sleep and risk looking gaunt and underperforming when they go to work. In cases in which folks cannot expel the gas in their body through burping, shortness of breath may come after as a result of acid reflux. The more it happens, the more anxious you might become as you don’t know how to counter the problem.

The thing is, there are a lot of illnesses and conditions these days that you can prevent from affecting you if you take certain supplements. Say, vitamins A, B, C, and E are known to offer relief to acid reflux patients. You may also ask a physician to prescribe multivitamins with potassium and magnesium to avoid leg cramps. Nevertheless, one supplement that can potentially cover a lot of areas health-wise is fish oil.

What Are The Benefits Of Taking Fish Oil?

Reduced Inflammation

Your body is comparable to a precious piece of land that needs the protection of special guards (white blood cells). After all, there are foreign invaders in the form of viruses and bacteria that are always lurking out there, finding a way to put you down. Once they manage to get in somehow, the natural reaction of your antibodies is to fight them, and that causes inflammation.

Getting inflammation when you have a sore throat or some kind of infection is essentially quite useful because it entails that your internal line of defense is working hard to protect you. However, when it is prolonged and later turns to chronic inflammation or other diseases – for instance, a simple cold becomes sinusitis – that’s when the real problem happens.

Thankfully, one of the benefits of taking high levels of fish oil is that it can reduce or regulate the inflammation in your body. A study from the Journal of the American College Nutrition (2002) has further revealed that EPA and DHA are more effective in diminishing inflammation than ALA and Omega-6 because they can successfully inhibit the tiny proteins produced by the cells which encourage inflammatory activities.

Improved Joint Strength

Rheumatic arthritis (RA) is the most common cause of joint pain, and CDC predicts that the number of adult Americans struggling with the joint disorder will go from 52 million (which is the current rate) to 78 million when 2040 comes. The redness, swelling, and pain are all present when the particular joints are tender, and such symptoms are elongated by the lack of EPA and DHA in the body. Thus, the regular and moderate intake of fish oil can help you alleviate your joint problems.

Better Hair Condition

When you are fed up with your receding hairline or balding spot, you need fish oil in your life. The capability of Omega-3 to reduce inflammation is proportional to its potential benefit of re-opening your hair follicles to allow the growth of hair once again. The more you take fish oil regularly, therefore, the more your mane may thicken.

Youthful Skin

Omega-3 are the long chains of fatty acids that your body cannot produce in high quantities even though they are required to promote glowing skin. It is a good thing that most fish oil products have significant amounts of EPA and DHA. These two compounds can deter the creation of cells that cause skin issues, such as acne, psoriasis, and melanoma, among others.

A mutual study conducted by the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health of Flinders Medical Center and the Rheumatology Unit of Royal Adelaide Hospital, both in Australia, has given rise to the suggestion that EPA can prevent the transformation of arachidonic acid into leukotriene B(4) and eicosanoids prostaglandins E(2). In simpler terms, it stops the Omega-6 from triggering the inflammatory-loving cytokines in the body.

Final Thoughts

There is no way to deny the costliness of getting hospitalized these days; that’s why many people try everything to avoid acquiring illnesses. This idea applies even for individuals who have health insurance because not all the bills that come before, during, and after the treatment gets covered by the policy. At some point, you will have no choice but to touch your savings – a task that may be difficult, especially if you don’t have much in the first place.

If you want to protect yourself against microbes and air-borne diseases, though, you should think of supplementing your diet with fish oil. Good luck!
